Israel Defense Forces has claimed that it eliminated Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of the Basij unit, during an operation in Iran.
According to the Israeli military, Soleimani had led the Basij paramilitary force for the past six years and held the rank of Sar-tip, equivalent to a Brigadier General. The IDF alleged that under his leadership, the Basij played a central role in suppressing anti-government protests across Iran.
Israeli officials said the Basij unit, which operates under the authority of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was used by the Iranian regime as a primary instrument to control civilian demonstrations. The force has been accused of carrying out violent crackdowns, mass arrests, and the use of force against protesters during periods of unrest.
Israel stated that Soleimani had been directly involved in directing operations against demonstrators during major protests in recent years.
Iranian authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the claim. Independent verification of the incident has also not been immediately available.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, with both sides accusing each other of military and covert operations across the region.
