In a heartbreaking incident that has once again brought the menace of dowry-related crimes into focus, a 21-year-old newly married woman from Gwalior reportedly died by suicide after enduring persistent harassment from her in-laws, who demanded a Murrah buffalo as dowry. Police have registered a case against five members of the husband’s family, who are currently absconding.
Harassment Over Unusual Dowry Demand
The victim, identified as Vimlesh Baghel, was married to Dinesh Baghel on January 31, 2024. According to police sources, soon after the wedding, her in-laws began demanding a Murrah buffalo—valued between ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh—as part of the dowry. When her family failed to meet the demand, Vimlesh allegedly faced repeated taunts, physical abuse, and mental harassment from her husband and his relatives.

Tragic Turn of Events
On September 20, the harassment reportedly escalated during a heated argument at her in-laws’ house. The following day, unable to bear the abuse, Vimlesh consumed acid. Though she was immediately rushed to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Her brother later filed a formal complaint with the local police, alleging continuous harassment over the dowry demand and naming her husband, parents-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law as the accused.
FIR Registered, Family on the Run
An FIR has been registered against Dinesh Baghel (husband), Imrat and Vidya Baghel (parents-in-law), Harisingh Baghel (brother-in-law), and Bhavana Baghel (sister-in-law) under relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act and IPC Section 306 (abetment to suicide).
Police have launched a search operation to trace the accused, all of whom have gone into hiding since the incident came to light.
Deep-rooted Social Evil
The case highlights how dowry harassment continues to claim lives in India, despite strict laws prohibiting such practices. Experts say that unconventional demands — like livestock or vehicles — have become more common, particularly in rural areas.
Women’s rights activists have called for stronger enforcement of dowry laws and improved mechanisms for early intervention in domestic abuse cases. They have also urged for better mental health support and legal assistance for newly married women facing harassment.
Government and Social Response
Local authorities have assured that justice will be delivered swiftly. Social organisations in Gwalior have also demanded that the state government strengthen awareness campaigns against dowry practices and provide protection for vulnerable women.
