In a chilling episode of domestic violence in South Delhi’s Madangir, a man named Dinesh was doused with boiling oil by his wife while he slept, and later had red chilli powder thrown onto his burnt body, according to his complaint to police. The incident occurred around 3:15 am inside their home in the Ambedkar Nagar / Madangir area, leaving Dinesh with severe burns and fighting for his life in intensive care.

Dinesh told police he had returned home late from work on October 2 and settled in for the night. Both his wife and their eight-year-old daughter were asleep. He alleges that while lying unconscious, his wife poured hot oil over his torso and face. Before he could react, she is said to have further aggravated his pain by sprinkling red chilli powder onto the blistering burns. When Dinesh tried to protest, his wife reportedly retorted, “Agar shor machaya to aur garam tel daal doongi” (“If you make a noise, I’ll pour more oil”).

The cries of pain drew neighbours and his landlord’s family who lived below. They knocked on the door and, after gaining access, found Dinesh writhing in agony and his wife attempting to flee or hide. Emergency help was called; Dinesh was first taken to a nearby clinic before being transferred to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors have labelled his injuries as “dangerous.”

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the penal code for grievous hurt and use of a dangerous weapon/means. According to the FIR, the couple had been married for eight years and had a troubled history. Two years earlier, his wife had filed a complaint with the Crime Against Women Cell, but that was reportedly resolved by a compromise. No arrests have been made yet, and police are investigating motives, prior disputes, and possible mental health factors.

This incident underscores the grave danger of domestic violence escalating into grievous bodily harm. Authorities may examine surveillance footage, take forensic samples from the scene, interview neighbours and witnesses, and closely scrutinize the couple’s past domestic complaints in building a case.
