H1B Visa Controversy: Pradhan Emphasizes Self-Reliance and Homegrown Talent for India’s Youth

Chennai: Addressing concerns over the recent H1B visa fee hike by the United States, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday emphasized that India’s youth do not need validation from foreign countries to achieve global success.

Speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Pradhan highlighted that with the right opportunities, young Indians can meet and exceed global standards without relying on foreign visas or external frameworks.

The minister stressed self-reliance over visa dependence, asserting, “I have confidence in the youth of our country. If they get opportunities, they can create global standards. I don’t want anybody’s visa or anybody’s model.” He framed his remarks against the backdrop of discussions on the H1B visa fee increase and the broader debate on ‘brain drain versus brain gain.’

Pradhan further emphasized the strength of India’s educational system and democratic framework, stating that these institutions provide all the resources needed for the nation to thrive.

Rejecting China’s approach to higher education as a model, he stated, “Certainly, China should not be a role model for India. We are proud of our liberal democracy,” highlighting that India will chart its own path.

He also underscored that innovation is not limited to elite institutions such as IITs. Citing the success of India’s Chandrayaan mission, executed by engineers from diverse educational backgrounds, he said, “Great things are the monopoly of none,” encouraging young innovators across the country to aim high regardless of their institutional affiliation.
