Why PM Narendra Modi’s Birthday Is Celebrated as ‘Sewa Diwas’ Across India

Every year, September 17 — the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — is observed as Sewa Diwas (Day of Service) across India. The day is not marked by grand celebrations but by acts of service, charity, and community welfare, reflecting the Prime Minister’s belief that true celebration lies in serving the nation and its people.

The tradition of celebrating Modi’s birthday as Sewa Diwas began in 2014, soon after he took office as Prime Minister. Since then, leaders, party workers, and citizens have been encouraged to participate in activities such as blood donation camps, cleanliness drives, tree plantations, health check-ups, and social awareness campaigns. The idea is to transform a personal occasion into a nationwide movement for public good.

This service-oriented approach is closely tied to Modi’s own philosophy and life journey. Having risen from humble beginnings, he has consistently emphasized values like discipline, compassion, and collective responsibility.

By urging citizens to mark his birthday through acts of seva (service), Modi reinforces his vision of “Nation First” and inclusive development.

This year, PM Modi will mark his 75th birthday in Madhya Pradesh, where he will launch the country’s largest-ever health outreach initiative for women and children — the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan and the 8th Rashtriya Poshan Maah.

The campaigns, running from September 17 to October 2, will be organized at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Community Health Centres, District Hospitals, and other government facilities across India.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observes the Prime Minister’s birthday as Sewa Diwas with various social initiatives. This year, the celebrations have been expanded into a two-week-long Sewa Pakhwada (Fortnight of Service) from September 17 to October 2, ending on the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Activities during this fortnight include health camps, Swachh Bharat cleanliness drives, nutrition awareness programs, and support for underprivileged communities.

Celebrating Modi’s birthday as Sewa Diwas is therefore more than just a symbolic gesture. It is an opportunity for citizens to contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more compassionate India — echoing the Prime Minister’s vision of a united and inclusive nation.
