Mumbai Police have issued a preventive action notice to Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey after a viral video showed him smashing a television and threatening to break TV sets of anyone broadcasting the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match.
The Samtanagar Police cited a possible breach of peace and directed Dubey to refrain from making provocative threats, maintain calm in the neighbourhoods, and cooperate with authorities. Police have warned that strict legal action will follow if he fails to comply.
The notice came after Shiv Sena (UBT) staged dramatic street protests across Maharashtra on Sunday, condemning the telecast of the match as an “insult to national sentiment” in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

In viral videos, Sena workers were seen stomping on broken TV sets, chanting “Cricket se humko bair nahi, Pakistan teri khair nahi” and “Bharat Mata ki jai.” Dubey himself smashed a TV screen and declared that the match should be banned, calling Pakistan a “terrorist state” and appealing to the BCCI and ICC to respect the emotions of 140 crore Indians.
He also urged Indian players to boycott the match, saying, “If you are true patriots, take a charter plane back home, we will welcome you as heroes. But if you play, we will boycott you, because nothing is bigger than the nation.”
Political reactions have been sharp. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray backed the protests, accusing the BCCI of prioritizing revenue over national interest. Opposition leaders from Congress and NCP also criticised the government, calling the match a failure of diplomacy.
However, Maharashtra minister and cricket administrator Ashish Shelar defended India’s participation, stating that international tournaments cannot be dictated by politics, even though bilateral ties with Pakistan remain frozen.
