The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu on Tuesday issued emergency helpline numbers for Indian nationals amid the escalating unrest in Nepal, where violent ‘Gen Z’ protests have erupted over alleged corruption and the recent social media ban.
Indians in Nepal can now contact the embassy for assistance at +977-980 860 2881 and +977-981 032 6134, which will remain active for emergencies. In an official post on X, the embassy urged all Indian nationals to save these numbers and use them if they face any urgent situation.
The advisory came just hours after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned following mounting pressure from nationwide demonstrations. His resignation was formally accepted by President Ram Chandra Poudel.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also released a travel advisory, urging Indians to defer all travel to Nepal until the situation improves. For those already in the country, the MEA advised staying indoors, avoiding public gatherings, and following instructions from both Nepali authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
The unrest has also impacted air travel. Air India cancelled four Delhi-Kathmandu flights on Tuesday, while IndiGo and Nepal Airlines also suspended several services between the two capitals. Normally, Air India operates six daily flights on this route.
Nepal has been plunged into chaos since Monday, when violent clashes between protesters and police broke out. According to reports, at least 20 people have died and around 300 others have been injured in the wave of unrest that continues to paralyse the Himalayan nation.
