Indian cricket fans were left concerned after a video of ODI captain Rohit Sharma visiting Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai late at night on Monday, September 8, went viral on social media. The reason behind his hospital visit remains unclear, raising questions about the skipper’s health.
Rohit, 38, recently cleared his mandatory fitness test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The veteran opener, who last featured in IPL 2025, has already retired from Test and T20I formats but expressed his ambition to play the 2027 ODI World Cup.
He retired from Test cricket in May this year, having earlier bowed out of T20Is after leading India to the T20 World Cup title. In his Test career, Rohit scored 4,301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.58.
The upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19, is seen as crucial for Rohit Sharma’s return. However, his selection is not guaranteed. The “Hitman” is determined to prove his form and fitness to secure a place in the World Cup 2027 squad.
Meanwhile, speculation is mounting over the captaincy. Reports suggest Shubman Gill may lead the Indian team in the Australia series, with the BCCI viewing him as Rohit’s long-term successor in ODIs. Gill had already taken over the Test captaincy from Rohit and impressed by scoring over 700 runs on the England tour, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
