Surguja (Chhattisgarh): A shocking case of corporal punishment has emerged from Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district, where a Class 2 student was hospitalised after being forced to do 100 sit-ups by her teacher for using the toilet without permission. The disturbing incident took place on Friday, coinciding with Teachers’ Day, at DPS Public School in Pratapgarh, Sitapur.
The victim, identified as eight-year-old Samridhi Gupta, had stepped out of her classroom to use the toilet when she was stopped by her teacher, Namrata Gupta, who was reportedly on her mobile phone. When the girl replied that she was going to the toilet, the teacher allegedly lost her temper, hit her with a stick, and then forced her to do 100 sit-ups inside the classroom.
The excessive punishment left the child in excruciating pain, unable to walk or stand. Four days later, she is still undergoing treatment at a hospital, where doctors have revealed that her leg muscles have been severely damaged.
Sitapur Block Education Officer Indu Tirki confirmed to Dainik Bhaskar that she has received reports of the incident. A probe team from the education department is set to investigate the matter within the next two days. Authorities have assured that if the teacher is found guilty, strict disciplinary action will be taken against her.
