Chaos in West Bengal Assembly: TMC and BJP MLAs Clash, Shankar Ghosh Hospitalized

Kolkata: Chaos erupted in the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday during a special session convened to discuss the alleged persecution and harassment of Bengali people in the state. The BJP boycotted the proceedings during the question hour, and tensions escalated, leading to a clash between BJP and TMC legislators. During the altercation, BJP legislator Shankar Ghosh was injured and subsequently suspended from the session for one day.

The clash began when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the Assembly on the issue of Bengali persecution. BJP legislators protested her speech, prompting the Chief Minister to accuse the opposition of insulting the Assembly and disrupting the session. “BJP people don’t do anything constructive. They are anti-Bengali and oppressing the Bengali language. They are trying to prevent people from hearing what we have to say. Maintaining peace is the responsibility of both parties. They are vote thieves and the biggest gang of looters,” Mamata said.

Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari sharply criticized the Chief Minister and the Assembly marshals, calling them “TMC goons.” He alleged that Shankar Ghosh was physically attacked and injured due to instigation by Mamata Banerjee and distraction by Speaker Biman Banerjee. “They are chanting ‘Modi chor’ (Modi thief), but we say ‘Chakri chor, gaddi chor’ (job thief, seat thief),” Adhikari added.

Following the incident, Speaker Biman Banerjee suspended Suvendu Adhikari for the entire session, while Shankar Ghosh was suspended for one day. During the suspension process, Shankar Ghosh fainted and had to be rushed to a hospital while being marshalled out of the Assembly after initially refusing to leave.
