Bombay High Court Orders Manoj Jarange to Vacate Azad Maidan

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday ordered Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange and his supporters to vacate Azad Maidan in Mumbai by 3 PM, warning of strict consequences, including contempt action, if the directive was ignored.

A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Aarti Sathe strongly criticized both the protestors and the Maharashtra government, stating that the agitation had crippled Mumbai and instilled fear among citizens. The court remarked, “After 3 PM, we will not allow anyone to remain. This is completely illegal. Citizens and judges alike cannot be put under siege.”

Senior advocate Satish Maneshinde, representing Jarange, apologized for the misbehavior of some protestors, clarifying that the activist never intended to disrupt law and order. He argued that the visit was planned a month in advance but no facilities were provided by the authorities. While permission was granted for 5,000 people, the court noted that tens of thousands had gathered, questioning the measures taken to control the crowd.

The bench also pulled up the state government for poor security arrangements, with Justice Chandrashekhar pointing out the lack of police presence during the night. The court stressed that normalcy must be restored immediately and instructed both the state authorities and Jarange to ensure the protestors leave the city. The matter is scheduled for further hearing at 3 PM.
