In anticipation of Independence Day, the Army successfully prevented an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of north Kashmir on Tuesday, resulting in a fierce gunfight that claimed the life of one soldier in action.
Following this encounter, the Army initiated a counter-infiltration operation and a suspected Border Action Team (BAT) operation in the vicinity, with a comprehensive search still in progress. Sources have suggested that the incident may have been a coordinated BAT operation involving personnel from the Pakistani Army and terrorists, although there has been no official confirmation to date.
Meanwhile, the anti-terror operation in the Akhal Devsar forest area of Kulgam has now reached its 13th day on Wednesday, marking it as the longest ongoing operation in the Valley. Joint teams from the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police commenced the cordon-and-search operation (CASO) on August 1 in the dense and expansive forest.
During the initial night of the gunfight, one local terrorist was neutralized, and four soldiers sustained injuries. Two of the injured soldiers later succumbed to their wounds, while the remaining two are currently recovering in the hospital. Due to the difficult terrain, officials anticipate that the operation may extend for an extended period. The Army has deployed Rudra helicopters, drones, and para commandos to thwart any potential escape.
Situation Following the Pahalgam Attack
The ongoing operations are part of a heightened crackdown in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. On July 28, during ‘Operation Mahadev’, security forces successfully eliminated three notorious Pakistani terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba, including commander Suleman Shah, Abu Hamza, and Jibran Bhai, in the elevated areas of Dachigam National Park near Srinagar.
Forces remain on high alert along the LoC while actively targeting armed terrorists, their overground workers, and sympathizers in the hinterland.
