The pilot of the F-7 aircraft that crashed into a building at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, on Monday has been identified as Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam Sagar, according to local media reports.
Towkir Islam Sagar, who belonged to the 35 Squadron and was part of the 76 BAFA course, passed away while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), as reported by The Daily Star, citing ISPR.
The report states that Sagar completed his initial 100 hours of flight training during his cadet years on PT-6 aircraft.
He subsequently served in the 15th Squadron, where he accumulated around 60 hours of flight time, before transferring to the 35th Squadron.
The training aircraft crashed into the school campus in Dhaka shortly after takeoff on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 individuals and injuring 164 others, according to military sources.
As per the military and a fire official, the Chinese-made F-7 BGI aircraft crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in the Uttara area during the afternoon while students were in class.
The military reported that the jet took off at 1:06 PM local time and crashed shortly thereafter, igniting a fire immediately. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
This incident marks the deadliest airplane crash in recent memory in the Bangladeshi capital.
Local media reports suggest that the majority of the injured were students. Relatives were seen panicking at the scene as rescuers utilized tricycle rickshaws and other available means to transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Rafiqa Taha, a student who was not at the school during the crash, told The Associated Press via phone that the school, which has around 2,000 students, provides education from elementary through twelfth grade. “I was terrified watching videos on TV,” said the 16-year-old. “My God! It’s my school.”
