Air India flight AI 2744 A320 (VT-TYA) arrived at Mumbai Airport on Monday but overshot the runway due to heavy rainfall in the area.

The flight was traveling to Mumbai from Kochi in Kerala. Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft veered off the runway shortly after landing because of adverse weather conditions.

Sources report that three tyres burst during the landing, and there may have been damage to the aircraft’s engine. However, the aircraft managed to taxi safely to the terminal gate, where all passengers and crew disembarked without any issues.

Air India released a statement confirming the occurrence.

“Flight AI2744, which was operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, encountered heavy rain during its landing, leading to a runway excursion post-touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have disembarked. The aircraft is currently grounded for inspections. The safety of our passengers and crew is our utmost priority,” stated an Air India spokesperson.

Emergency response teams at CSMIA were quickly deployed to handle the situation.

“An aircraft arriving from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai at 09:27 hours on 21 July 2025. CSMIA’s emergency response teams were activated immediately to address the runway excursion. All passengers and crew are safe. Minor damage has been reported to the airport’s primary runway – 09/27. To ensure operational continuity, the Secondary Runway 14/32 has been put into service. At CSMIA, safety is always our top priority,” a spokesperson for CSMIA stated.

Runway 09/27, the main runway of the airport, has sustained minor damage and is currently under inspection and repair. Airport operations have been temporarily redirected to the secondary runway to keep flight schedules running with minimal disruption.
