Rohit Pawar, the grandnephew of Sharad Pawar and a leader of NCP (SP), engaged in a confrontational exchange with a police officer at the Azad Maidan police station in Mumbai on Friday.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Pawar was seen yelling at the officer, “Keep your voice down.”
The altercation occurred when Rohit Pawar visited the police station with NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad to check on an injured party member. During their visit, Pawar was recorded shouting at a sub-inspector in Marathi, saying, “Keep your voice down, keep your voice down. If you raise your hand, I will teach you a lesson.”
While gesturing towards the officer, Pawar added, “Don’t be smart; if you can’t speak properly, then don’t speak at all.”
The video was posted on X by Yogesh Sawant, the social media vice president for NCP (SP) in Maharashtra. The caption read, “If you harass our workers without cause, Rohit dada and Awhad saheb are prepared to fight.” Sawant indicated that this would be the type of response if the state government attempted to use the police to suppress NCP (SP) members.
After the incident, Rohit told reporters that a police officer at the station failed to provide accurate information and allegedly raised his voice, which sparked the argument.
Supporters of NCP (SP) also protested outside the Marine Drive police station in Mumbai early Friday morning. Both Rohit and Awhad were present among the demonstrators, calling for the release of activist Nitin Deshmukh.
On Friday, a case was filed against Awhad at the Marine Drive police station. The Mumbai police charged the NCP(SP) MLA with obstructing public servants in the performance of their duties.
This incident follows a clash the previous day between supporters of NCP (SP) and BJP at the Maharashtra Assembly complex. A scuffle erupted between the supporters of NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad and MLA Gopichand Padalkar on Thursday, resulting in both groups being detained inside the Assembly until late at night. Ultimately, they were surrendered to the authorities.
