Odisha burn patient airlifted to AIIMS Delhi

A 15-year-old girl, who was receiving treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after being set on fire by three assailants in Odisha’s Puri district, was airlifted to Delhi on Sunday, according to officials.

Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena informed reporters that a green corridor was established to transport the patient from AIIMS Bhubaneswar to Biju Patnaik International Airport, with one platoon of police deployed for the operation.

Bhubaneswar traffic DCP Tapan Kumar Mohanty stated that the ambulance carrying the patient arrived at the airport from AIIMS Bhubaneswar in just 10 to 12 minutes. She was transported in an advanced life support ambulance accompanied by a specialized medical team.

In healthcare, a green corridor refers to a designated, unobstructed route for ambulances that are transporting organs for transplantation or critically ill patients, ensuring they reach their destination as quickly as possible.

Upon arrival at the airport, she boarded an air ambulance bound for the national capital, where she is set to be admitted to AIIMS Delhi, officials reported.

The girl, who suffered 70 percent burns, was on oxygen support in the ICU at the Department of Burn Centre in AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

“The patient’s condition is stable, and her blood pressure, which was low yesterday, has improved. It is safe to transfer her,” stated Ashutosh Biswas, executive director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, to reporters prior to her departure.

In response to the incident where the girl was set on fire, TMC claimed that the BJP is focusing on attacking the opposition rather than ensuring the safety of daughters.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Saturday that the state government was considering airlifting the minor to Delhi for enhanced treatment. However, he noted that the decision would be made by AIIMS Bhubaneswar authorities based on her health status.

As the victim was able to communicate on Saturday, police took her statement in the presence of a magistrate at the ICU, an official mentioned, emphasizing that her testimony is crucial for the investigation.

A preliminary police investigation has uncovered that three youths on motorcycles intercepted a teenager, forcibly took her to the banks of the Bhargavi River near Bayabar village in the Balanga police station jurisdiction, doused her with a flammable substance, and set her ablaze on Saturday. According to police, the assailants fled the scene after committing the act.

Local residents extinguished the flames and subsequently transported her to Pipili government hospital, from where she was later transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Officials reported that the girl’s mother has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Balanga police station, noting that the victim is a Class 8 dropout and her father is employed at a motor garage.
