Blue Tigresses achieve qualification for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time

India achieved a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the host nation Thailand, securing their spot in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026 on Saturday, July 5. When the final whistle sounded at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium on July 5, 2025, Sangita Basfore was overcome with emotion, according to the AIFF press release.

India had just made history! For the first time, the Blue Tigresses successfully qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Their last appearance in this prestigious tournament was in 2003, during a time when there were no qualifying rounds. They returned in 2022 as hosts but had to withdraw due to a COVID-19 outbreak. This time, there were no exceptions—only merit.

In the 15th minute, Pattaranan Aupachai surged down the right flank and delivered a cutback for Jiraporn Mongkoldee, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Indian goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu. Mongkoldee attempted again just two minutes later from long range, but her shot struck the crossbar.

In the 28th minute, Anju Tamang sparked a quick attack down the right before setting up Basfore at the edge of the box. With ample time and space, the midfielder unleashed a fierce right-footed shot that rocketed into the net, igniting celebrations in the Indian dugout, as noted in the AIFF release.

Just three minutes later, India came close to extending their lead. A well-executed play down both wings ended with a cross into the box, which fell favorably for Pyari Xaxa following a defensive error. However, the forward’s attempt was thwarted by Thailand goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao.

Thailand fought hard to respond, but India remained resolute, defending cohesively and maintaining their formation. The crowd grew anxious, the clock wound down, and confidence surged within the Indian camp.

Now, with their sights set on Australia, a grander dream looms ahead—a first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027.
