Nehal Modi, Brother of Fugitive Nirav Modi detained in US on ED and CBI request

Nehal Modi, the brother of fugitive Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States following extradition requests from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to money laundering and criminal conspiracy charges.

According to the United States Department of Justice, Nehal Modi was taken into custody on July 4. This arrest was made in response to a joint extradition request from the ED and CBI.

The US prosecution’s complaint indicates that extradition proceedings are underway on two charges: one for money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002, and another for criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Indian authorities are seeking Nehal Modi in connection with the massive Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, which is considered one of the largest banking scams in India’s history. Investigations by the ED and CBI have identified him as a significant player in laundering illicit funds for his brother, Nirav Modi, who is also facing extradition from the UK.
