AC Spark Triggers Engine Fire in Greater Noida Bus, Nine Passengers Killed on Yamuna Expressway

AC Spark Triggers Engine Fire in Greater Noida Bus, Nine Passengers Killed on Yamuna Expressway

A devastating fire broke out aboard a sleeper bus travelling on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida late Wednesday night, killing nine passengers and leaving several others injured. Preliminary findings indicate that a spark or blast in the bus’s air-conditioning system ignited lubricating oil in the engine, causing the fire to spread rapidly through the vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 11 pm near Dayanatpur village in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar district. The bus, which had a Bihar registration, was travelling from Delhi towards Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh and was carrying around 35 passengers when the fire erupted.

How the fire started

According to police, the fire appears to have originated in the engine area after a malfunction in the air-conditioning system. A spark or blast from the AC system reportedly came into contact with engine lubricating oil, which then caught fire.

The flames spread quickly, turning what initially appeared to be a mechanical problem into a major emergency within a short period. Fire officials said the presence of fuel and other combustible material around the engine contributed to the rapid intensification of the blaze.

The precise technical cause is still being investigated, and authorities are also examining whether any safety-related lapses contributed to the tragedy.

Passengers noticed a burning smell

Some passengers reportedly became aware that something was wrong after noticing a burning smell while the bus was travelling along the expressway.

Passengers alerted the driver and asked for the vehicle to be stopped so that the source of the smell could be checked. However, by the time the bus was brought to a halt, flames had already broken out.

The fire then spread rapidly through the bus, leaving passengers with very little time to react.

Several passengers were asleep when the incident occurred. The combination of darkness, thick smoke and the sudden spread of flames made it difficult for people inside the sleeper bus to reach the exits quickly.Greater Noida Bus Fire: 9 Killed After AC Blast Triggers Fire On Sleeper Bus On Noida Highway

Smoke made the escape difficult

Survivors described a chaotic situation inside the vehicle as passengers attempted to escape after being alerted to the fire.

Thick smoke reportedly filled the bus, reducing visibility and making movement difficult. Passengers rushed towards the exits as the flames intensified.

Rescue officials said between 20 and 25 people were successfully brought out of the burning vehicle. Some passengers sustained burn injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Nine passengers, including a woman, could not escape. Police said the victims died because of burns and suffocation.

Emergency teams rushed to the spot

After receiving information about the fire, local police, fire-service teams and rescue personnel were dispatched to the site.

Several fire units reached the location and began efforts to control the blaze and rescue passengers trapped inside the bus. The operation was carried out near the 33-kilometre milestone of the Yamuna Expressway, within the jurisdiction of Jewar police station.

By the time emergency personnel reached the scene, the fire had already engulfed a large portion of the vehicle.

The severely damaged bus was subsequently examined as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Driver and conductor taken into custody

Police said the driver and conductor managed to leave the scene before the arrival of the police teams. They were subsequently traced and taken into custody.

Authorities said an FIR would be registered and a detailed investigation would be conducted. Investigators are expected to examine the condition of the bus, its electrical and air-conditioning systems, maintenance records and other possible safety concerns.

The investigation will also seek to establish whether the fire was solely the result of a mechanical failure or whether negligence or inadequate safety measures played a role.

Government announces financial assistance

Following the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh authorities announced financial assistance for the families of those who died and for passengers injured in the incident.

The families of the deceased were announced to receive ₹2 lakh each, while injured passengers were to receive ₹50,000 each.

Authorities also directed officials to ensure that injured passengers receive appropriate medical treatment and that assistance is provided to affected families.

The Centre also announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for each deceased person’s family and ₹50,000 for those injured.

Investigation into safety standards underway

The Greater Noida bus fire has raised questions about fire safety and emergency preparedness in long-distance sleeper buses, particularly vehicles operating overnight when many passengers are asleep.

The incident also highlights the risks associated with fires originating in engine compartments, where fuel, lubricants, electrical components and other combustible materials can allow flames to spread quickly.

Investigators will now determine whether the bus had undergone required safety inspections and whether its electrical, air-conditioning and engine systems were functioning properly before the journey.

The authorities are also expected to examine whether passengers had adequate access to emergency exits and whether safety equipment on board was sufficient to deal with a fire.

For now, the exact chain of events leading to the fatal blaze remains under investigation. The preliminary assessment points to an AC-related spark igniting engine oil, but investigators will have to establish the precise technical failure and determine whether any additional factors contributed to the deaths.

The tragedy has left nine families mourning while authorities continue efforts to establish accountability and prevent similar incidents involving passenger buses in the future.
