A 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus after the driver and conductor allegedly misled her about the vehicle’s destination in Greater Noida, police said. The teenager, who was travelling to Noida to meet relatives, had become stranded at Pari Chowk during heavy rain and darkness when she sought help from the passing bus.
The incident reportedly took place on August 4 and came to light after the girl approached police following the alleged assault. The driver and conductor of the bus have since been arrested, while the vehicle has been seized for forensic examination.
According to investigators, the girl is a Class 11 student from Mainpuri district. She had left home on August 3 without informing her parents after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling towards Sector 63 in Noida, where her cousin was staying.
Teen stranded at Pari Chowk amid heavy rain
Police said the teenager mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida after it became dark and heavy rain began. She reportedly realised that she was still some distance away from her intended destination.
While looking for transport, she saw an approaching sleeper bus and signalled for it to stop. The bus was reportedly empty at the time.
The driver and conductor allegedly told her that they were travelling towards Noida Sector 63 and could take her in that direction. Trusting their claim, the girl boarded the vehicle.
Investigators later found that the bus was not operating as a regular passenger service at the time. It had reportedly been taken to a workshop in Greater Noida’s Surajpur area for repairs and was being driven back after the work was completed.
Assault allegedly took place inside moving bus
According to the girl’s complaint, the situation changed shortly after the bus began moving.
Police said the conductor allegedly behaved inappropriately towards the teenager before he and the driver allegedly sexually assaulted her inside the moving sleeper bus.
The survivor told investigators that she resisted the assault and was allegedly threatened with death by the accused if she continued to oppose them.
The bus continued moving towards Delhi after the alleged assault. Police said the sleeper bus had curtains covering its windows, which could have prevented people outside the vehicle from seeing what was happening inside.
The teenager was eventually abandoned near Ring Road in the Kashmere Gate area of Delhi.
Bus travelled more than 40 kilometres
Investigators said the bus travelled a substantial distance from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to the Kashmere Gate area.
The vehicle reportedly passed through parts of the Greater Noida-Noida route before entering Delhi and continuing towards Kashmere Gate. Police are examining CCTV footage from different locations along the route to reconstruct the bus’s movement and establish the sequence of events.
The long journey has also raised questions about how the vehicle travelled through multiple surveillance points and road stretches without the alleged crime being detected.
Investigators are examining available CCTV footage, the bus’s movement and other evidence to determine whether the vehicle made any stops during the journey.
Survivor approached police after being abandoned
After being left near Kashmere Gate, the teenager managed to reach the police and report the alleged assault.
Delhi Police subsequently registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The case includes allegations relating to gang rape, kidnapping and assault.
Because the survivor is a minor, her identity has not been disclosed.
Police teams immediately began searching for the bus and the two men believed to be involved in the alleged crime.
Driver and conductor arrested
The accused driver and conductor were traced to a parking area in Timarpur in north Delhi, where police arrested them.
The accused have been identified as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep. Police said the bus was also seized and sent for forensic examination.
Investigators are examining physical evidence recovered from the vehicle along with CCTV footage collected from different points on the route.
The forensic examination is expected to help investigators establish whether material evidence inside the bus supports the allegations made by the survivor.
Investigation examines bus route and security gaps
The case has raised serious concerns about passenger safety and the security mechanisms surrounding private sleeper buses.
Investigators are examining why an empty bus was able to pick up a minor passenger at night and travel a long distance without the circumstances being noticed.
The presence of curtains inside the sleeper bus is also being examined as part of the investigation. Police are looking into the vehicle’s operating history, its journey from the repair workshop and the movements of the driver and conductor.
CCTV footage from roads and other locations is being analysed to establish the exact route taken by the bus and identify any possible stops or diversions.
Jurisdictional questions emerge
The case has also raised questions regarding jurisdiction because the alleged assault reportedly began in the Greater Noida area before the bus travelled into Delhi.
Police authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are examining the circumstances surrounding the case and the handling of the investigation.
The jurisdictional issue does not change the seriousness of the allegations, and investigators are continuing to collect evidence to establish what happened during the journey.
Wider concerns over safety of women and minors
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of women and minors who rely on unfamiliar transport, particularly at night and during adverse weather conditions.
The teenager was reportedly stranded, alone and seeking a way to reach her relatives when she accepted help from people she believed were travelling towards her destination.
The case has therefore raised broader concerns about passenger verification, surveillance systems, driver and conductor accountability and safety measures on private buses.
Authorities are expected to rely on the survivor’s statement, CCTV footage, forensic evidence and other investigative material to determine the full circumstances of the alleged crime.
The two accused have been arrested and the investigation remains ongoing. Since the allegations involve a minor, authorities are required to protect the survivor’s identity and ensure that her privacy is maintained throughout the legal proceedings.
