A dispute over a fare of around ₹1,000 allegedly escalated into a fatal assault in west Delhi, leading to the arrest of a 59-year-old van driver, his wife and their son. Police said the passenger was allegedly beaten to death during an argument inside a vehicle before his body was abandoned in the Naraina area.

The case came to light after police received information about an unidentified body lying on a pavement in Naraina Vihar. The discovery initially presented investigators with a difficult challenge because the deceased was not carrying readily identifiable documents and there were no immediate eyewitnesses to the alleged killing.

The victim, estimated to be around 35 years old, was found without clothes and with blood stains on his body near the wall of a government school. Police observed a deep injury on the right side of his head, along with several other injuries, indicating that he had allegedly suffered a violent assault.

One of the most important clues at the scene was a distinctive tattoo on the man’s left forearm. The tattoo was heart-shaped, featured an arrow and carried the names “Anand” and “Renu”. Investigators treated the tattoo as a significant identifying clue while attempting to establish the man’s identity.

Argument Over Fare Allegedly Led to Assault

According to police, the accused driver, identified as Rajinder Kumar alias Annu, allegedly picked up the passenger from IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram on August 17. The journey later became contentious when an argument reportedly broke out over payment of the fare.

Police said the fare was around ₹1,000 and that the passenger allegedly refused to pay the amount. The disagreement reportedly intensified during the journey after the vehicle entered west Delhi.

Investigators allege that Kumar then assaulted the passenger using bricks and an earthen-pot-like object. The attack allegedly caused serious injuries and ultimately resulted in the man’s death.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the exact sequence of events inside the vehicle, remain under investigation. Police are examining available physical and electronic evidence to reconstruct what happened during the journey and establish the role of each accused.

Wife and Son Allegedly Helped Conceal Evidence

After the alleged assault, Kumar is accused of contacting his wife, Kamini Makhija, 50, and their son, Laksh Makhija, 28. Police allege that the two subsequently assisted in concealing the body and other evidence connected with the incident.

Investigators said the victim’s clothes and shoes were later recovered from a jungle area based on information allegedly provided during questioning. Police are also examining the vehicle believed to have been used in the incident.

The three accused were arrested on Friday night, according to police.

Investigators are now examining whether the accused acted together in disposing of the body and concealing evidence after the alleged killing. Their individual roles and the circumstances surrounding the disposal of the victim’s belongings are part of the ongoing investigation.

CCTV Footage Becomes Key to Investigation

With the victim’s identity initially unknown and no clear eyewitnesses available, investigators turned to CCTV footage from the area.

Police teams examined approximately 500 CCTV recordings from cameras installed near the location where the body was found and along roads connected to the area. During the analysis, investigators noticed a Maruti Eeco moving suspiciously around the relevant period.

The vehicle’s registration number was reportedly not clearly visible in the initial footage. Investigators therefore followed the vehicle across multiple CCTV cameras, tracking its movements before and after the suspected crime.

By reconstructing the vehicle’s route, police were eventually able to identify the Maruti Eeco and trace it to Kumar, a resident of Naraina village.

The CCTV investigation consequently became a crucial part of the case, helping police move from an unidentified body at a roadside location to a specific vehicle and suspected individuals.

Forensic Teams Examined Crime Scene

A crime team and Forensic Science Laboratory personnel examined the location after police were alerted to the body. Investigators collected available physical evidence from the scene before the deceased was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital declared the man brought dead.

Police subsequently registered a case and began examining the circumstances of the death. The injuries found on the victim, blood stains at the location and other evidence were considered important in determining how the man died and whether the assault occurred at the spot where the body was discovered or elsewhere.

The recovery of the vehicle and the victim’s belongings is also expected to assist investigators in establishing the sequence of events.

Victim’s Identity Still Not Established

Despite the arrests, police have not yet conclusively established the identity of the deceased. The heart-shaped tattoo bearing the names “Anand” and “Renu” remains one of the key clues available to investigators.

Police are continuing efforts to identify the victim through the tattoo and other available evidence. Investigators are also verifying information obtained during questioning and examining whether additional evidence can establish the man’s identity.

The absence of a mobile phone, wallet or cash reportedly found with the victim has added to the challenge of establishing who he was. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding his belongings and the possibility that relevant evidence may have been removed or concealed.

Investigation Continues

The case highlights how a relatively small financial disagreement can allegedly escalate into deadly violence. What began as a dispute over a fare of around ₹1,000 has resulted in a murder investigation involving three arrested members of a family.

For investigators, the case has involved multiple stages: identifying an unknown victim, examining forensic evidence, tracing CCTV footage, reconstructing the movement of a vehicle and recovering belongings believed to be connected with the deceased.

The Maruti Eeco remains an important piece of evidence as police work to establish the complete chain of events. Investigators are also working to determine the precise circumstances of the alleged assault, the subsequent disposal of the body and the roles allegedly played by the driver’s wife and son.

Police said the investigation remains underway, while efforts continue to establish the identity of the deceased and reconstruct the events that led to his death.
