The Indian government is considering a significant tightening of drug-testing requirements for commercial pilots, with a proposal that could require every pilot to undergo at least one random test each year. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said on Tuesday that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is consulting stakeholders on possible changes to the existing regulatory framework governing psychoactive-substance testing among aviation personnel.
The proposal comes amid renewed scrutiny of pilot fitness and aviation safety following a serious incident involving an Air India flight operating from Phuket to Delhi earlier this month. At present, regulations require random drug testing covering 10% of the overall pilot network each year.
