A 34-year-old man has been arrested in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, after allegedly assaulting a delivery agent following an argument over the delay in delivering an order. The incident, which took place in the Ganga Sagar Colony area, came to wider attention after CCTV footage of the alleged assault circulated on social media.

Police said the incident occurred on Friday within the jurisdiction of Bhawanpur police station. The accused, identified as Yaman, allegedly confronted the delivery executive, identified as Amit, after he arrived at an apartment to hand over an order.

According to Amit’s complaint, the delivery was delayed by approximately five minutes. However, the customer allegedly accused him of arriving 15 minutes late. What began as an argument over the delivery time subsequently escalated into a physical confrontation.

Delivery agent allegedly slapped and kicked

CCTV footage of the incident reportedly shows Yaman taking Amit’s mobile phone before allegedly slapping and kicking him. The footage further appears to show the delivery executive being taken inside the apartment, where the alleged assault continued.

Amit repeatedly asked for his phone to be returned, but the accused allegedly refused to hand it back. A woman can also be seen during the altercation and appears to speak to Yaman before asking him to take the delivery worker inside the flat.

The allegations have raised concerns among delivery workers, many of whom depend on such jobs for their livelihood and routinely interact with customers at residential buildings, offices and other locations.

Delivery worker alleges threats

In his complaint, Amit made several additional allegations against Yaman. He claimed that the accused threatened to implicate him in a molestation case involving his wife. Amit said he challenged the accused to contact the police if he had committed any wrongdoing, but alleged that no such call was made.

The delivery agent also alleged that he was threatened with death during the confrontation. He claimed that his mobile phone was taken away and that an attempt was made to take his money.

Amit reportedly works as a part-time delivery agent in the evenings while continuing his studies. He said the alleged threat to his life left him frightened and deeply concerned about his safety while performing his job.

CCTV footage brings incident to wider attention

The incident gained wider attention after CCTV footage began circulating on social media. Fellow delivery workers said they became aware of the incident the following morning when the video was shared in an Instagram group.

After recognising Amit in the footage, the delivery workers contacted him and asked him to explain what had happened. Amit was subsequently brought to their office, where he reportedly narrated the sequence of events.

The group later approached Bhawanpur police station and submitted a complaint against Yaman. The delivery workers also went to the housing society where the incident allegedly occurred, but claimed that the accused had already left the premises.

The circulation of the CCTV footage played a significant role in bringing attention to the allegations and prompted fellow delivery workers to collectively seek police intervention.

Delivery workers stop work, demand apology

Following the incident, delivery workers announced a protest by stopping work and demanding action against the accused.

The workers said they would not resume deliveries until Amit received an apology. They also demanded that the accused issue a public apology through a video.

The delivery workers maintained that even if there had been a delay in delivering an order, it could not justify physically assaulting a person carrying out his professional duties.

Their protest also highlighted broader concerns surrounding the treatment of delivery personnel, who frequently work under time pressure and have to deal directly with customers when orders are delayed because of traffic, weather, navigation problems or other circumstances beyond their control.

Police register case after written complaint

Amit submitted a written complaint to Bhawanpur police on August 15. Following the complaint, police registered a case against Yaman.

Police subsequently arrested the 34-year-old accused, who is a resident of Ganga Heights in Ganga Sagar Colony. Bhawanpur police station house officer Joginder Singh confirmed the arrest and said the accused would be produced before the court in accordance with legal procedure.

The arrest came after the alleged assault attracted public attention through the circulation of CCTV footage and following intervention by fellow delivery workers.

Incident sparks concern over safety of delivery workers

The Meerut incident has also brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by delivery workers while carrying out their daily responsibilities. Delivery personnel often operate under strict time expectations while travelling through congested roads and navigating multiple orders during a shift.

Arguments over delays can occur when customers expect deliveries to arrive within a particular time frame. However, the alleged assault in Meerut has prompted questions about how such disputes should be handled and the importance of resolving disagreements without resorting to violence or threats.

For delivery workers, interactions with customers form an essential part of their job, making personal safety an important concern. The incident has therefore drawn attention not only because of the alleged physical assault but also because fellow workers felt compelled to organise a protest and seek police action.

The investigation into the case is continuing, while the accused is expected to be presented before the court as part of the legal process. The allegations against him will be subject to judicial proceedings, and further developments are expected as police proceed with the case.
