The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its food safety enforcement campaign in the Pune division, suspending the licences or registrations of 16 food establishments after a series of inspections uncovered serious hygiene and food safety violations.

The action, carried out during a special four-day inspection drive from August 11 to 14, covered restaurants, hotels, canteens, dairies and food-related e-commerce facilities. Among the prominent establishments facing regulatory action are a Burger King outlet on East Street in Pune’s Camp area and Hotel Sayaji in Lonavala.

Several quick-commerce facilities operated by Zepto and Blinkit have also been served suspension orders as part of the enforcement exercise, indicating that the authorities are extending scrutiny beyond conventional restaurants to businesses involved in the storage and distribution of food products.

Four-day inspection drive targets food safety violations

The inspections were conducted under the state’s broader “Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra” campaign. FDA officials said the drive was intended to identify establishments that were not complying with statutory food safety and hygiene requirements.

According to officials, inspections revealed multiple cases of non-compliance. The violations were considered serious enough in several cases to warrant immediate suspension of licences rather than merely issuing warnings or improvement notices.

The regulatory action is significant because food establishments are required to maintain prescribed standards relating to hygiene, storage, handling, preparation and distribution of food. Failure to meet these requirements can pose risks to consumers, particularly when deficiencies involve the handling or storage of perishable products.

The FDA’s Pune division said establishments found to be in violation would be required to address the deficiencies before they can resume operations in accordance with applicable regulatory procedures.

Burger King outlet in Pune among establishments facing action

One of the most prominent names in the action is the Burger King outlet located on East Street in Pune’s Camp area.

The establishment was among the food businesses whose licence was suspended following the inspection campaign. The action has drawn attention because the Camp area is a well-known commercial and dining destination in Pune and the outlet has long been frequented by residents and visitors.

The FDA’s action, however, is based on food safety and hygiene compliance rather than the popularity or size of an establishment. The inspection drive covered businesses of different sizes and categories, with regulatory measures determined by the nature and seriousness of the deficiencies identified by officials.

Hotel Sayaji in Lonavala also faces suspension

Hotel Sayaji in Lonavala was another prominent establishment named in the FDA’s action.

The hotel, operated by Fortune Enterprises, was among the businesses whose food licence was suspended after the inspection. The regulatory action reflects the FDA’s focus on ensuring that food safety requirements are followed not only by standalone restaurants but also by hotels and hospitality establishments where large numbers of meals may be prepared and served.

Food safety compliance in hotels can involve several stages, including procurement of ingredients, storage, preparation, kitchen sanitation and handling of cooked food. Deficiencies at any stage can lead to regulatory intervention.

Restaurants and hotels across the Pune division affected

The crackdown was not limited to Pune city. Several establishments across the wider Pune division were also subjected to regulatory action.

The list of establishments facing suspension included Hotel Chul Mutton on Nagar Road, Simply South in Bhosari, Hotel Pawan in Kolhapur and Rajesh Chinese in Sangli. Food outlets associated with Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut in Satara were also among those named in the enforcement action.

A canteen operated by JBM Hospitality at an HDFC Bank facility in Golden East, Wanwadi, Pune, also faced action.

The wide geographical spread of the inspections demonstrates that the FDA’s enforcement drive was aimed at assessing compliance across different types of food businesses rather than focusing on a single locality or category.

Quick-commerce warehouses come under scrutiny

The latest enforcement exercise also highlights the growing regulatory importance of quick-commerce operations.

Food and grocery delivery platforms increasingly depend on warehouses and fulfilment centres where perishable, packaged and frozen products are stored before being delivered to consumers. Such facilities must maintain appropriate conditions to protect the quality and safety of food products.

FDA officials served suspension orders on facilities associated with Zepto and Blinkit in different parts of Pune. The action places food storage and distribution infrastructure under the same regulatory spotlight as restaurants and hotels.

The inclusion of these facilities is particularly relevant as consumers increasingly purchase groceries, dairy products, packaged foods and other edible items through online delivery platforms. Proper temperature control, segregation, storage and handling are therefore important parts of the food safety chain.

Dairies also face regulatory action

The enforcement drive extended to dairy businesses as well.

Among the establishments facing action were Om Sai Ram Milk and Milk Products in Khed in Pune district and Dhamnath Doodh Shitikaran Kendra in Loni, Ambegaon.

Dairy products are considered particularly sensitive from a food safety perspective because improper temperature control, storage or handling can accelerate spoilage and increase the risk of contamination.

The FDA’s action against dairy establishments therefore forms part of the wider effort to ensure compliance at different stages of the food supply chain.

Focus shifts to high-fat, high-sugar and high-salt foods near schools

The FDA is also preparing for another enforcement exercise targeting the sale of foods high in fat, sugar and salt, commonly referred to as HFSS foods.

Officials said inspections of establishments selling such products around school premises would begin from the following Monday. Food businesses operating near schools have been advised not to sell these products within a 50-metre radius of school premises.

Authorities have warned that businesses found violating the restriction could face legal action.

The proposed enforcement is aimed at addressing concerns surrounding children’s exposure to unhealthy food products. Schools and their surrounding commercial areas are particularly important in this context because students may have easy access to packaged snacks, sugary products and other foods with high levels of fat, salt or sugar.

Wider implications for food businesses

The Pune FDA action sends a broader message to restaurants, hotels, food retailers, dairies and online grocery operators that compliance with food safety regulations is subject to active enforcement.

For consumers, inspections of this nature can provide greater confidence that food businesses are being monitored for hygiene and safety standards. For operators, however, the action also underlines the need for continuous compliance rather than treating food safety inspections as occasional regulatory checks.

Maintaining clean premises, following proper food-handling procedures, storing ingredients appropriately and ensuring that required licences and registrations remain valid are fundamental responsibilities for food businesses.
