Seventeen schoolchildren had a narrow escape on Tuesday after the bus carrying them caught fire near Dhauwa village in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. All the students were safely evacuated from the vehicle before the fire spread across the bus, officials said.

The incident occurred while the school bus was carrying children from Pithla village to a private school located around 12 kilometres away. The students were travelling as usual when the vehicle reportedly developed a problem near Dhauwa.

According to preliminary information, the bus passed over a pothole, following which smoke was noticed coming from the front portion of the vehicle. The driver reportedly acted quickly after noticing the problem and stopped the bus.

Driver evacuates children before flames spread

As smoke began emerging from the vehicle, the driver immediately stopped the bus and instructed the children to get out. The students were evacuated before the flames intensified and spread through the vehicle.

Local residents also rushed towards the spot after noticing the fire and helped ensure that the children moved away from the burning bus.

All 17 children escaped without injuries. However, the fire caused extensive damage to the vehicle and destroyed schoolbags, books and other belongings that were inside the bus.

The quick response by the driver is believed to have prevented a potentially serious incident, particularly because the bus was carrying a large number of children.

Electrical fault suspected

A preliminary assessment suggests that an electrical short circuit could have been responsible for the fire. The exact cause, however, is yet to be conclusively established.

Three fire tenders sent to the spot

After information about the fire reached the authorities, three fire tenders were sent to the location. Firefighters worked to control the flames, but the fire had already spread extensively across the bus.
