India Test captain Shubman Gill suffered an injury scare ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka after sustaining a blow to his right finger during a practice session. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill will not participate on the opening day of India’s three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI as a precautionary measure.
The injury occurred during India’s training session ahead of the practice game. According to reports, Gill was struck on his right finger while facing fast bowler Gurnoor Brar during batting practice. The batter immediately called for medical assistance and was attended to by the team’s support staff. After receiving initial treatment, Gill had his finger strapped by the team physiotherapist.
Despite the setback, the right-handed batter attempted to continue his practice session. He returned to the nets and faced spin bowling before later suffering another blow while taking part in fielding drills. Gill reportedly misjudged a sharp chance at slip, resulting in further discomfort to his right hand.
The BCCI later released an official statement confirming the injury and providing an update on the captain’s condition.
“Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India’s practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress,” the board stated.
With Gill unavailable for the first day of the practice match, senior batter KL Rahul has been handed the responsibility of leading the Indian side against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. The team management is closely monitoring Gill’s recovery as the opening Test match of the two-game series is scheduled to begin in more than a week.
The injury has created concern within the Indian camp, especially with Gill playing a key role as the team’s Test captain. The management will be hoping that the injury is minor and that the 26-year-old returns to full fitness before the start of the Test series.
Gill has been an important figure in India’s red-ball setup and recently took over leadership responsibilities in Test cricket. His availability will be crucial as India prepares for a challenging overseas assignment against Sri Lanka.
The medical team’s assessment over the next few days will determine the seriousness of the injury and whether any further scans or treatment will be required. For now, the Indian team has decided to take a cautious approach by resting Gill from the warm-up match to avoid aggravating the problem.
The focus will remain on Gill’s recovery as India continues preparations for the upcoming Test series, with fans and team officials awaiting further updates from the BCCI medical unit.
