New Delhi witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday as widespread showers continued across several parts of the national capital, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue multiple weather alerts warning residents about intense rain, thunderstorms and lightning activity.
The weather department issued an orange alert for Delhi during the day, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall between 115 mm and 204 mm. The alert suggested that several areas of the city could experience intense showers along with possible disruption due to waterlogging, traffic congestion and difficult travel conditions.
At around 9:15 am, the IMD upgraded warnings for specific regions of Delhi by issuing a red alert for the south-eastern parts of the city. An orange alert was issued for the south-western region and central areas, while northern parts of Delhi were placed under a yellow alert.
According to the IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall were likely across multiple districts, including South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi and North West Delhi.
The weather agency also predicted moderate rainfall activity in these areas, along with the possibility of light thunderstorms in several parts of central, north-east, north-west and northern Delhi.
Rainfall Recorded Across Several Parts of the Capital
Several areas of Delhi experienced light showers late on Thursday night and during the early hours of Friday. Weather monitoring stations recorded rainfall at various locations between 11:30 pm on Thursday and 8:30 am on Friday.
Chattarpur recorded the highest rainfall during this period with 3.5 mm of rain. Safdarjung, which serves as Delhi’s primary weather monitoring station, recorded 3.4 mm of rainfall.
Other areas also witnessed rainfall activity, with Palam receiving 2.3 mm of rain and Naraina recording around 2 mm. Mayur Vihar and Janakpuri reported lower rainfall levels of approximately 0.5 mm each.
Although rainfall intensity varied across different parts of the city, the continued showers brought cooler conditions but also raised concerns over water accumulation in low-lying areas. 
IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Lightning Activity
The IMD advised residents to remain cautious as thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain were expected in several parts of Delhi. The department highlighted that unstable weather conditions could continue during the morning hours, increasing the possibility of sudden heavy showers.
The forecast indicated that both urban and residential areas could experience rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning. Authorities generally advise people to avoid unnecessary travel during severe thunderstorms and take precautions in open areas.
Weather Conditions Affect Daily Life in Delhi
The rainfall provided relief from hot and humid weather conditions that had affected the capital in recent days. However, heavy showers also posed challenges for commuters, with concerns over traffic movement, waterlogging and delays in transportation services.
Delhi frequently faces urban flooding issues during intense monsoon spells due to rapid rainfall accumulation and drainage challenges. Civic authorities generally monitor vulnerable locations during periods of heavy rainfall and issue advisories to residents.
The IMD continues to track weather developments and may issue further updates depending on rainfall intensity and changing atmospheric conditions across the city.
