The results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 have been announced, with more than 1.1 million candidates qualifying for admission to undergraduate medical and allied health science courses across India. The declaration of the results marks the beginning of the counselling process for approximately 1.37 lakh MBBS seats available in government and private medical colleges, along with admissions to BDS, AYUSH, veterinary, nursing, and other healthcare programmes.
NEET UG remains the country’s largest medical entrance examination, attracting nearly two million aspirants every year. The examination determines admissions to undergraduate medical courses nationwide and is regarded as one of the most competitive entrance tests in India.
Two Candidates Secure Joint Top Rank
This year, Aryan Gupta from Punjab and Panshul Bansal from Haryana emerged as the joint toppers after scoring 715 out of a possible 720 marks. While both candidates secured identical scores, the official ranking was determined using the prescribed tie-breaking criteria.
The list of top-performing students reflects strong performances from several states. Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Maharashtra each produced two candidates in the top ten, while Haryana and Uttar Pradesh contributed one candidate each.
Women Outperform Men Once Again
Female candidates continued their impressive performance in NEET UG 2026, accounting for more than 58 percent of all qualified candidates. The results indicate that women achieved a higher qualification rate than male candidates, continuing a trend observed in recent years.
Most successful candidates belonged to the 17–19 age group, highlighting the growing number of students qualifying for medical education immediately after completing higher secondary school.
Competition Remains Extremely High
The examination once again demonstrated the intense competition for medical admissions across the country. Only a limited number of seats are available compared to the large number of qualified candidates.
According to the official statistics:
- Nineteen candidates scored above 700 marks.
- One hundred and thirty-eight candidates secured more than 690 marks.
- Nearly 1,500 candidates obtained scores above 650.
- More than 10,000 candidates crossed the 600-mark level.
- Around 91,000 candidates scored 500 marks or higher.
These figures underline the high level of competition expected during the counselling process. 
Category-Wise Qualification Data Released
The examination authorities also published category-wise qualification statistics covering candidates from General, OBC-NCL, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
Qualified candidates from all categories are now eligible to participate in the centralised counselling process for admissions to undergraduate medical and allied healthcare courses.
Exam Conducted After Fresh Schedule
The 2026 examination cycle was unusual after the original test was cancelled following allegations of a question paper leak. To ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of the admission process, a fresh examination was conducted nationwide on June 21 under enhanced security measures.
The declaration of the results concludes a challenging examination season during which authorities worked to complete the evaluation process while ensuring transparency and fairness for all candidates.
Final Answer Key Included Revised Evaluation
Before announcing the results, the examination authority released the final answer key after reviewing objections submitted by candidates.
As part of the evaluation process, one question was removed from assessment, while another physics question was accepted as having two correct answers. Eligible candidates received marks accordingly under the revised evaluation guidelines.
Counselling Process to Begin Soon
With the results now declared, qualified candidates will move to the counselling stage for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, veterinary, nursing, and other undergraduate healthcare programmes.
Although more than 1.1 million candidates have qualified, they will compete for approximately 1.37 lakh MBBS seats, making the counselling process highly competitive. Admissions will be granted based on merit, reservation policies, candidate preferences, and seat availability across participating institutions.
