DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan Arrested After High Court Rejects Anticipatory Bail in Chief Minister Vijay Remarks Case

Senior DMK leader and Tiruchendur MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan was arrested on Friday after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition in connection with a criminal case stemming from his alleged remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. The arrest has intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling government and the principal opposition, with the DMK accusing the administration of using law enforcement to target political rivals.

The case originates from a public meeting held on June 20 in Athur, Thoothukudi district, during celebrations marking the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. According to the police, Radhakrishnan allegedly made controversial and defamatory remarks directed at Chief Minister Vijay while addressing party workers and supporters. Following complaints lodged by functionaries of the ruling party, Athur police registered a case and initiated an investigation.

High Court Declines Pre-Arrest Protection

Seeking protection from arrest, Radhakrishnan approached the Madras High Court with an anticipatory bail plea. The petition came up before Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan, who declined to grant relief.

During the hearing, the court reportedly questioned the conduct expected of an elected legislator, observing that public representatives should exercise restraint in their speeches. The judge refused to extend anticipatory bail, clearing the way for the police to proceed with the arrest.

Arrest Follows Court Order

Soon after the High Court’s decision, Athur police took Radhakrishnan into custody. Reports indicated that he was detained while inspecting development-related works in his constituency before being formally arrested in connection with the case.

Police officials stated that the arrest followed established legal procedures after the dismissal of the anticipatory bail petition. The investigation into the alleged remarks is expected to continue, with authorities examining evidence related to the speech delivered during the June 20 event.  Tiruchendur DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan arrested for defamatory remarks against CM Vijay

Political Reactions Intensify

The arrest immediately triggered sharp political reactions across Tamil Nadu.

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly criticised the police action, describing it as an oppressive measure aimed at silencing the opposition. He alleged that the ruling government was misusing state machinery against political adversaries and vowed that the DMK would continue to oppose what it called undemocratic actions.

DMK MP Kanimozhi also condemned the arrest, accusing the government of targeting opposition leaders through what she described as authoritarian methods. She asserted that the party would not be intimidated by such actions and reaffirmed its commitment to challenging the government’s decisions through democratic means.

Background of the Case

The controversy revolves around remarks allegedly made by Radhakrishnan during a political gathering in Athur. According to the complaint filed with the police, portions of his speech were considered defamatory and offensive toward Chief Minister Vijay.

Based on these allegations, law enforcement authorities registered a criminal case and launched an investigation. As legal proceedings progressed, Radhakrishnan sought anticipatory bail to avoid arrest, but the High Court declined to provide relief, leading to his detention.

Veteran Leader Faces Fresh Legal Challenge

Anitha Radhakrishnan is a senior DMK leader representing the Tiruchendur Assembly constituency and has served as Tamil Nadu’s Fisheries Minister in a previous DMK government. He remains one of the party’s prominent leaders in the southern districts of the state.

His arrest comes at a time of heightened political rivalry in Tamil Nadu, where exchanges between the ruling dispensation and the opposition have become increasingly confrontational. The latest development is expected to further escalate political tensions, with both sides accusing each other of undermining democratic norms and institutions.

Investigation Continues

Authorities have indicated that the investigation into the alleged remarks will proceed in accordance with the law. Depending on the findings of the probe and subsequent judicial proceedings, the case could have broader political implications as the contest between the ruling government and the opposition continues to intensify in the state.
