A devastating road accident on National Highway 16 in Andhra Pradesh claimed the lives of four people after two lorries collided and burst into flames in the early hours of Wednesday. The tragic incident occurred near Boyapalem village, triggering a massive fire that engulfed both heavy vehicles and left rescue teams battling the blaze for several hours.
According to police officials, the accident took place on a stretch of NH-16 that connects major commercial routes along India’s eastern corridor. Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the lorries crashed into another vehicle while attempting to maneuver around a stationary vehicle on the highway. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in an immediate fire that rapidly spread through both trucks.
Authorities said the vehicles were carrying different types of cargo, including paper and construction materials. The highly combustible nature of some of the goods contributed to the intensity of the blaze, making rescue efforts extremely challenging.
The drivers of both lorries, along with two other occupants, were trapped inside the vehicles as flames engulfed the cabins. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, they were unable to escape. All four victims were charred to death at the scene.
Local residents alerted emergency services soon after the collision. Fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and launched an operation to contain the flames. The fire was eventually brought under control after several hours, allowing authorities to recover the bodies from the wreckage.
Police officials cordoned off the accident site and diverted traffic to prevent further disruptions on the busy highway. Long queues of vehicles were reported as emergency crews worked to clear the damaged trucks and debris from the roadway.
Senior police officers visited the scene to assess the situation and supervise the investigation. Forensic teams also inspected the accident site to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the collision.
Initial findings indicate that poor visibility, highway congestion, or an attempt to avoid a stationary vehicle may have played a role in the crash. However, investigators have stated that all possible angles are being examined before reaching a final conclusion.
The identities of the deceased are being verified, and efforts are underway to inform their families. Post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted as part of the legal and investigative process.
The accident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety on major national highways, particularly involving heavy commercial vehicles. Experts have repeatedly stressed the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations, proper vehicle maintenance, adequate highway lighting, and improved warning systems for stalled or stationary vehicles.
National Highway 16 is one of India’s busiest transportation corridors, carrying a significant volume of freight traffic every day. Accidents involving heavy vehicles on this route often lead to severe consequences due to the size of the vehicles and the nature of the cargo being transported.
Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. Authorities are expected to review vehicle records, driver histories, and available evidence from the scene to determine responsibility and identify any violations that may have contributed to the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, officials have urged motorists and commercial vehicle operators to exercise caution, follow traffic norms, and remain vigilant while traveling on high-speed highway stretches to prevent similar incidents in the future.
