Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s deputy and senior state leader D.K. Shivakumar has indicated that the government may move towards imposing a ban on pan masala and gutka products in the state, citing growing concerns over substance abuse, public health risks, and the increasing influence of addictive products among youth.
The statement comes amid renewed discussions within the state administration on tightening regulations around tobacco-based and nicotine-containing chewable products, which are widely consumed despite existing health warnings and partial restrictions in several parts of the country.
Government Reviewing Public Health Impact
According to senior officials, the Karnataka government is currently reviewing data related to the consumption patterns of pan masala and gutka, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Authorities are examining how these products contribute to long-term health issues such as oral cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and nicotine dependency.
Shivakumar’s remarks reflect growing concern within the administration that such substances are not merely tobacco products but are increasingly linked to broader drug addiction patterns in urban and rural areas alike.
Possible Legal and Regulatory Action
