A shocking case of alleged caste-based violence has emerged from Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district, where an 18-year-old Dalit youth lost his life after reportedly being assaulted over his friendship with a girl belonging to an upper-caste community. The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and renewed concerns over caste discrimination and violence linked to inter-caste relationships in rural India.
The victim, identified as Ketan Lal, was a resident of Deval village in the Pratapnagar region. According to police officials and the complaint filed by his family, the teenager had reportedly been friends with a minor girl from a neighboring village for several months. Investigators believe that objections to this friendship may have played a central role in the fatal attack.
Incident Allegedly Planned After Phone Call
According to the complaint submitted by Ketan’s father, the incident unfolded late at night when the girl allegedly contacted Ketan and asked him to come to her village. Responding to the call, Ketan reportedly traveled to the village along with his friend, Diwakar Dimri.
Upon reaching the village, the two youths were allegedly confined inside a room by members of the girl’s family. Authorities claim that they were then subjected to a violent assault using sticks and other objects. The attack left both young men seriously injured.
Police sources indicate that the assault continued for a considerable period before the victims were eventually released. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation, and officers are collecting witness statements and forensic evidence to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Victim Succumbed to Injuries
Family members said they were informed about Ketan’s condition the following morning. His father rushed to the location and reportedly found his son severely injured and covered in blood.
The teenager was immediately taken to a nearby healthcare facility for treatment. However, doctors were unable to save him, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Meanwhile, Ketan’s friend Diwakar Dimri sustained serious injuries during the assault and was admitted to a district hospital for medical treatment. Officials stated that he remains a key witness in the investigation and his testimony is expected to play an important role in determining the events that led to the attack.
Public Anger and Demand for Justice
The death triggered widespread anger among local residents and members of the victim’s community. Reports indicate that family members and villagers initially refused to accept the body, demanding swift police action and the arrest of all those allegedly involved in the attack.
Community leaders and local residents called for a thorough investigation, arguing that the incident reflects persistent caste-based prejudices that continue to affect vulnerable communities despite legal safeguards.
The case has reignited discussions about social barriers surrounding inter-caste friendships and relationships, particularly in rural areas where traditional social hierarchies often remain deeply entrenched.
Police Register Murder Case Under SC/ST Act
Senior police officials confirmed that a formal criminal case has been registered. Authorities have invoked charges of murder along with provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, recognizing the potential caste-related nature of the crime.
Investigators have detained at least one suspect for questioning and stated that additional arrests could follow as evidence is examined. Police teams are continuing to gather statements from witnesses, family members, and other individuals connected to the case.
Officials emphasized that all aspects of the incident, including the alleged motive linked to the friendship between the victim and the minor girl, are being thoroughly investigated.
Broader Concerns Over Caste-Based Violence
The tragedy has once again highlighted the challenges posed by caste-based discrimination and violence in parts of India. Despite constitutional protections and stringent legal provisions designed to safeguard marginalized communities, incidents involving hostility toward inter-caste relationships continue to surface across various regions.
Social activists argue that such cases demonstrate the need for stronger awareness campaigns, community engagement, and effective enforcement of laws intended to prevent caste-related crimes.
As the investigation progresses, authorities face mounting pressure to ensure accountability and deliver justice to the victim’s family while addressing broader concerns about caste prejudice and social intolerance.
Police officials have assured the public that the case will be pursued rigorously and that anyone found responsible for the attack will face legal consequences under applicable laws.
