Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari has intensified the political debate surrounding illegal immigration in West Bengal by advocating for a strict “detect, delete and deport” policy, drawing parallels with immigration enforcement measures associated with former United States President Donald Trump.

The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly made the remarks while addressing party workers and supporters during a political gathering, where he alleged that unchecked infiltration from neighboring countries posed a serious threat to national security, demographic balance, and administrative integrity in the eastern state.

Adhikari argued that illegal immigration has become one of the most pressing issues facing West Bengal and accused the ruling state government of ignoring the matter for political gains. He claimed that a comprehensive verification drive was necessary to identify undocumented migrants allegedly residing in the state without legal authorization.

Using the slogan “detect, delete and deport,” the BJP leader called for authorities to first identify illegal immigrants, remove their names from official government records and voter lists, and subsequently initiate deportation proceedings in accordance with the law. He described the proposed mechanism as a firm administrative model aimed at protecting national interests and strengthening border management.

The remarks immediately triggered political reactions across West Bengal, further intensifying the already heated political environment ahead of future electoral battles in the state. Opposition leaders criticized the comments, accusing the BJP of attempting to polarize voters through identity and citizenship-related narratives. Critics argued that such statements could deepen social tensions and create fear among minority communities and migrant populations. 

Adhikari, however, defended his position by insisting that the issue was linked to national security rather than religion or community identity. He maintained that India must adopt stricter immigration enforcement policies and claimed that illegal infiltration impacts public resources, welfare schemes, employment opportunities, and internal security.

The BJP has consistently raised concerns regarding border infiltration in eastern India, particularly in states sharing international boundaries. West Bengal’s long and porous border with Bangladesh has remained a politically sensitive issue for years, frequently surfacing during election campaigns and parliamentary debates.

Political analysts believe the latest statement is part of the BJP’s broader strategy to sharpen its nationalist messaging in the state while targeting the ruling Trinamool Congress government over governance and border control issues. The controversy also revives debates surrounding citizenship verification exercises, voter identity concerns, and immigration laws that have previously sparked nationwide political discussions.

The ruling Trinamool Congress leadership responded sharply to the allegations, accusing the BJP of using divisive rhetoric for electoral purposes. Party representatives argued that the BJP was attempting to create communal polarization by repeatedly focusing on immigration-related issues rather than addressing governance and economic concerns affecting ordinary citizens.

Despite the criticism, Adhikari reiterated that strict administrative action was necessary to safeguard the interests of legal citizens and ensure the integrity of electoral and welfare systems. He urged the central and state authorities to coordinate efforts for identifying undocumented migrants and implementing stronger border surveillance mechanisms.

The issue of illegal immigration continues to remain a politically explosive subject in Indian politics, particularly in border states where concerns over identity, citizenship, security, and demographic change frequently intersect with electoral narratives. With political tensions escalating in West Bengal, the debate is expected to remain at the center of political discourse in the coming months.
