A tragic road accident on the Mumbai-Goa Highway in Maharashtra’s Raigad district claimed the life of a 79-year-old man and left five members of his family injured after their car reportedly crashed into a stationary container vehicle near a toll naka area. The incident occurred during the evening hours near Chandve village limits, triggering concerns over highway safety and the dangers posed by improperly parked heavy vehicles.
According to police officials, the deceased was identified as Ashok Mahadev Raut, a retired resident from Dahisar in Mumbai. He was travelling with his family in a Swift Dzire car when the vehicle rammed into a stationary container truck positioned near the Chandve Toll Naka on the Goa-Mumbai lane of the highway. The impact of the collision was severe, causing extensive damage to the front portion of the car and resulting in fatal injuries to the elderly passenger.
Authorities stated that the accident took place at approximately 5:45 pm while the family was returning towards Mumbai. Initial investigations suggest that the container truck was allegedly parked in a hazardous manner on the roadside, creating a dangerous obstruction for approaching vehicles. The collision occurred suddenly, leaving little time for the driver of the family car to react.
Five members of the Raut family sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The injured were identified as Seema Ashok Raut, 76, Amit Ashok Raut, 49, Sumit Ashok Raut, 41, Geetanjali Sumit Raut, 36, and seven-year-old Angad Sumit Raut. Some of the victims reportedly suffered serious injuries and remain under medical observation.
Local residents, highway police personnel, and emergency responders quickly reached the accident site after receiving information about the crash. Rescue teams worked to remove the trapped occupants from the mangled vehicle before shifting the injured to hospital facilities for urgent treatment. Traffic movement on the stretch was temporarily affected as authorities conducted rescue and clearance operations.
Police officials have registered a case against the container driver for allegedly parking the heavy vehicle negligently and in a manner that endangered public safety. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the accident, including road visibility, vehicle positioning, and possible violations of highway parking regulations.
The accident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about safety on the Mumbai-Goa Highway, a route that has witnessed several serious accidents over the years. Road safety experts frequently point to issues such as reckless parking, poor lighting, speeding, and inadequate warning systems as major contributors to fatal crashes on national highways.
Officials have urged motorists to remain cautious while travelling on highways, particularly during evening and night hours, and emphasized the importance of strict enforcement against illegally parked heavy vehicles. Further investigation into the Raigad crash is currently underway.
