A senior functionary associated with Vijay’s political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been arrested in Tamil Nadu in connection with an alleged financial fraud estimated at nearly ₹25 crore. The arrest has triggered fresh political controversy in the state at a time when TVK continues to remain under intense public and political scrutiny following its rapid rise in Tamil Nadu politics.
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Saravanan, was taken into custody after multiple complaints were filed alleging large-scale cheating and financial misconduct involving private lenders and investors in and around Pudukkottai district. Investigators stated that the accused allegedly borrowed huge sums of money from several businessmen, financiers, and influential individuals over a prolonged period while reportedly promising high returns and repayment assurances.
Authorities said the complaints began surfacing after the accused allegedly failed to repay the borrowed amounts within the promised timelines. As financial liabilities mounted, several lenders reportedly approached law enforcement agencies claiming they had been deceived in what investigators now suspect may be a coordinated financial fraud operation.
Police sources indicated that the total amount involved in the case could exceed ₹25 crore, though a detailed financial audit and investigation are still underway to determine the exact scale of the alleged scam. Officials are also examining whether additional individuals were involved in facilitating the transactions or assisting in the movement of funds.
The arrest has attracted significant political attention because of the accused’s association with TVK, the political outfit founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay. However, investigators have not indicated any direct involvement of the party leadership in the alleged fraud. Law enforcement agencies are currently focusing on financial records, transaction trails, loan documents, and statements from complainants as part of the ongoing probe.
The development comes during a politically sensitive period in Tamil Nadu, where TVK has emerged as a major force in state politics. The party recently witnessed rapid expansion and growing public visibility following its electoral gains and increasing influence in the political landscape.
Officials familiar with the investigation stated that more arrests are possible if evidence reveals the involvement of additional associates or intermediaries. Police are also verifying whether any forged documents, fake assurances, or unlawful financial schemes were used to obtain money from lenders.
Legal experts suggest the accused could face multiple charges under provisions related to cheating, criminal breach of trust, conspiracy, and financial fraud if the allegations are substantiated during the investigation. Authorities are expected to present the accused before a local court while seeking further custodial interrogation to uncover the broader financial network linked to the case.
Political observers believe the controversy could become a challenge for TVK as opposition parties may attempt to target the party over the arrest of one of its functionaries. At the same time, analysts note that the final political impact will depend largely on the outcome of the police investigation and whether any wider links emerge during the probe.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have urged individuals who may have been financially affected to come forward and cooperate with authorities.
