Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has defended his tactical decision to not use veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal during the team’s high-scoring IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals, despite the side’s seam bowlers struggling to contain runs in a dramatic chase.
Punjab Kings suffered a narrow three-wicket defeat after failing to defend a massive total of 210 in Dharamsala. The result extended their losing streak and sparked widespread debate over Iyer’s captaincy choices, particularly the surprising omission of Chahal from the bowling attack.
The experienced leg-spinner, who has often been a go-to wicket-taking option in pressure situations, was not handed a single over during Delhi Capitals’ successful chase. Fans and former cricketers questioned the move as Punjab’s pace unit leaked runs in crucial middle and death overs.
Addressing the criticism after the match, Iyer admitted that the thought of introducing Chahal did cross his mind during the innings. However, he explained that the pitch conditions appeared more favorable for seam bowling, influencing the tactical call.
According to the Punjab Kings skipper, the surface was offering movement to fast bowlers and the management believed disciplined execution with pace could produce breakthroughs. He stated that the bowlers failed to consistently hit the desired line and length, which ultimately allowed Delhi Capitals to regain momentum in the chase.
Punjab Kings had started the game strongly after posting an imposing 210/5 in 20 overs, powered by aggressive batting performances from their top and middle order. Iyer himself contributed a crucial half-century, helping the side maintain a commanding run rate throughout the innings.
However, Delhi Capitals responded fearlessly despite losing early wickets inside the powerplay. The middle-order partnership and late acceleration shifted the pressure back on Punjab Kings, who struggled to capitalize on key moments in the field.
The match also featured costly dropped catches, which further complicated Punjab’s efforts to defend the target. Delhi Capitals eventually chased down the total with an over to spare, sealing a memorable victory in one of the season’s highest-scoring encounters.
The decision to keep Chahal out of the attack became one of the defining talking points of the match because of the leg-spinner’s reputation as a proven wicket-taker in T20 cricket. The veteran has consistently delivered breakthroughs in the IPL over the years and is widely regarded as one of the league’s most effective spin bowlers.
This is not the first time Iyer’s handling of Chahal has come under scrutiny during the ongoing season. Earlier in the tournament, cricket experts had questioned the captain for not fully utilizing the spinner during another tight contest, even when Chahal had bowled economically.
The defeat dealt another setback to Punjab Kings’ campaign as the race for playoff qualification intensifies. After a strong start to the season, the franchise has struggled to maintain consistency in recent matches, increasing pressure on both the captaincy and bowling combinations.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals boosted their playoff hopes with the crucial win, showcasing composure under pressure during a difficult chase. Their batting unit displayed remarkable intent and adaptability, especially against a bowling attack expected to dominate on a seamer-friendly pitch.
As IPL 2026 enters its decisive phase, Punjab Kings will now look to regroup quickly and address concerns surrounding their bowling strategies and on-field execution before their upcoming fixtures.
