Olympic medal-winning wrestler Sakshi Malik has publicly accused the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) of deliberately obstructing fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s return to competitive wrestling, escalating an already intense dispute between top athletes and the national governing body.

Malik expressed strong concern over what she described as repeated and intentional barriers being placed in the way of Phogat’s comeback journey. She suggested that administrative decisions and procedural restrictions were being used to prevent the decorated wrestler from re-entering competitive action despite her readiness to return.

According to Malik, the situation has gone beyond a routine administrative disagreement and now reflects a deeper governance crisis within Indian wrestling. She argued that athletes who have represented the country at the highest level deserve fair treatment and transparent processes, especially when attempting to resume their careers after a break. 

The controversy centres around Vinesh Phogat’s attempted return to competitive wrestling after stepping away following the Paris Olympics cycle. Reports indicate that Phogat has been unable to participate in key domestic tournaments due to eligibility conditions, registration issues, and compliance requirements linked to federation rules and anti-doping regulations.

Phogat has previously claimed that procedural hurdles, including registration restrictions and communication gaps, have effectively blocked her comeback plans. The WFI, however, has maintained that all decisions are being taken strictly in accordance with established regulations and international wrestling guidelines.

Sakshi Malik’s remarks have now added significant political weight to the dispute. She has urged higher authorities, including the Prime Minister, to step in and ensure that athletes are not subjected to unfair treatment or institutional roadblocks. Malik emphasised that the credibility of Indian sports administration is at stake if such conflicts continue without resolution.

The situation has also reignited broader debates about athlete welfare, federation accountability, and governance reforms in Indian sports bodies. Several sportspersons and observers have previously raised concerns about transparency and communication gaps between athletes and administrative authorities.

As tensions continue to rise, the issue has evolved into a larger confrontation between prominent wrestlers and the sport’s governing structure, with calls growing louder for independent oversight and systemic reform.
