Authorities in the US state of Texas have launched a major investigation after six bodies were discovered inside a Union Pacific cargo train near the city of Laredo, close to the US-Mexico border. The shocking incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when railway personnel conducting a routine inspection reportedly found multiple deceased individuals inside a train boxcar at a rail yard near Interstate 35.

According to local law enforcement officials, emergency crews and police officers responded to the scene near mile marker 13 along Jim Young Way in north Laredo shortly after receiving the distress call. Upon arrival, authorities confirmed that all six individuals found inside the boxcar were dead. No survivors were located during the search operation.

Investigators have not yet released the identities, ages, genders, or nationalities of the deceased. Officials also declined to confirm whether the victims were migrants attempting to cross the border or whether the train had originated from Mexico before entering Texas. The exact cause of death remains unknown pending autopsy and forensic examinations.

Police described the investigation as being in its early stages, with authorities carefully examining the cargo train, surrounding rail yard, and available surveillance evidence. Law enforcement agencies are also attempting to determine how the victims entered the sealed train compartment and how long they may have been trapped inside. 

The incident has drawn national attention because Laredo serves as one of the busiest border transit hubs in the United States, frequently used for freight transportation and cross-border trade. The city has previously witnessed cases involving migrants traveling in dangerous conditions inside trucks, trailers, and freight containers while attempting to enter the country illegally.

Officials noted that temperatures in the region had climbed into the upper 90s Fahrenheit on the day the bodies were discovered, raising concerns that extreme heat may have contributed to the deaths. However, investigators stressed that no official conclusions would be made until medical examinations are completed.

Union Pacific issued a statement expressing sadness over the tragedy and confirmed it is cooperating fully with local authorities as the investigation continues. Security personnel and investigators remained at the rail yard for several hours collecting evidence and documenting the scene.

The discovery has once again highlighted the growing dangers associated with illegal migration routes near the southern US border, where overcrowded vehicles, extreme weather conditions, and hidden transportation methods have previously led to fatal incidents.

Authorities are expected to release additional details after autopsies are completed and next-of-kin notifications are made. Federal agencies may also join the investigation depending on findings related to immigration or cross-border activity.
