TVK and AMMK Clash Over Alleged Support Letter as Tamil Nadu Government Formation Drama Deepens

The political uncertainty surrounding government formation in Tamil Nadu intensified dramatically after a controversy erupted between actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) over an alleged letter of support submitted to the Governor.

The dispute has added another layer of tension to an already volatile post-election scenario in the state, where no single party initially secured a clear majority in the Assembly. As political negotiations continue behind closed doors, allegations of forgery, misinformation, and political manipulation have now become central to the unfolding power struggle.

The controversy began after a purported letter from AMMK’s lone MLA, S. Kamaraj, surfaced in support of TVK’s bid to form the government. The letter reportedly reached Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as Vijay’s party attempted to gather the numbers required to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

However, the AMMK leadership swiftly rejected the development and accused TVK of spreading false information. AMMK chief T.T.V. Dhinakaran publicly questioned the authenticity of the letter and alleged that the document was fabricated. His party maintained that no official decision had been taken to support Vijay’s government formation efforts.

The sharp reaction triggered a political confrontation between the two parties at a critical moment when every MLA’s support has become crucial in deciding the future government of Tamil Nadu.

TVK, on the other hand, defended its position and claimed that the support extended by the AMMK legislator was genuine. In an attempt to counter allegations of forgery, the party reportedly released visual evidence purportedly showing the MLA drafting or signing the support letter. The move was seen as an effort to establish credibility and reassure the Governor that TVK possessed the necessary backing to stake claim to power.  TVK Claims MLA Kamaraj Wrote Letter In support, Refutes AMMK Chief TTV Dhinakaran's Remarks

The latest controversy comes amid unprecedented political developments in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly elections. Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, significantly disrupting the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state’s political landscape. However, the party remained short of the majority figure of 118 seats required to form a stable government.

Since the declaration of results, intense negotiations and alliance-building efforts have dominated the political atmosphere in Chennai. Several smaller parties and regional groups have been approached for support as the battle for government formation entered a crucial phase.

Congress was among the first parties to extend support to TVK, followed by backing from Left parties including CPI and CPI(M), as well as VCK and IUML. These developments brought Vijay’s camp closer to the majority threshold and strengthened speculation that the actor-turned-politician could soon become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Despite these assurances, uncertainty continued due to the Governor’s insistence on formal proof of support from enough legislators. Reports suggested that Raj Bhavan was carefully verifying every letter submitted by supporting MLAs before taking a final decision on inviting TVK to form the government.

The alleged AMMK support letter therefore became politically significant, as even a single MLA’s backing could influence the arithmetic in the Assembly and alter the balance of power.

Political observers believe the controversy highlights the fragile and rapidly shifting nature of coalition politics in Tamil Nadu after the fractured mandate. The situation has also intensified public debate over the transparency of post-poll negotiations and the role of constitutional authorities during government formation.

Meanwhile, rival parties continue to closely monitor developments, with both DMK and AIADMK exploring possible strategies to prevent TVK from consolidating power. The evolving political drama has transformed Tamil Nadu into one of the country’s most closely watched political battlegrounds.

As allegations and counter-allegations continue, all eyes remain on Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, whose next move is expected to determine the immediate political future of the state. Whether the disputed support letter proves genuine or forged may now play a crucial role in shaping the final outcome of Tamil Nadu’s high-stakes government formation process.
