In a major leadership transition within India’s military establishment, the Union government has appointed Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The appointment marks a significant development in India’s defence structure as the veteran officer prepares to succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes later this month.

According to the official announcement, Lt Gen Raja Subramani will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs, a key role that places him at the centre of strategic military coordination and defence reforms. He is expected to formally assume office after General Chauhan demits the position on May 30, 2026.

The appointment comes at a time when India continues to focus on military modernisation, theatre command restructuring, and deeper integration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As CDS, Lt Gen Raja Subramani will serve as the principal military adviser to the government on tri-services matters and oversee coordination between the armed forces and the civilian defence establishment.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani brings decades of operational and strategic experience to the country’s highest military post. Before his appointment, he served as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat from September 2025. Earlier, he held the post of Vice Chief of the Army Staff between July 2024 and July 2025 and previously commanded the Army’s Central Command. 

Throughout his distinguished military career, the officer has handled several crucial assignments across operational, intelligence, and strategic domains. His service record includes roles such as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, Chief Instructor at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence, and Chief of Staff of the Northern Command. He also commanded formations in sensitive regions including Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern sector.

Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, Lt Gen Raja Subramani has served the Indian Army for nearly four decades. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy and has also undergone advanced military studies in India and abroad. His experience in high-altitude warfare, operational planning, and strategic leadership has earned him recognition across defence circles.

The decorated officer has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for distinguished service to the nation.

The post of Chief of Defence Staff was created in 2019 to enhance jointness among the three armed forces and streamline military decision-making. The CDS also functions as Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and plays a crucial role in defence procurement, strategic planning, and military reforms.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani’s appointment is being viewed as a move towards continuity in defence management, especially as India advances efforts to integrate military operations and strengthen national security preparedness. His experience within both operational military commands and the National Security Council Secretariat is expected to contribute significantly to ongoing reforms in the defence sector.
