The United States has given the go ahead for Iran’s football team to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, some people travelling with the team may not be allowed to enter the country, reports stated.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that there is no problem with the players. He said athletes are welcome, but certain team staff could face restrictions. These include people who may have links with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). As per reports, the US has already declared the IRGC a terrorist organisation. This bars anyone connected to it from entering the US, even if they are listed as trainers, journalists, or support staff.

US President Donald Trump also said that athletes should not be affected by political tensions. He made it clear that players will not be punished. Reportedly the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada starting June 11. Despite ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, there is no official plan to remove Iran from the tournament.

Earlier, there were suggestions that Iran could be replaced, but no such decision has been made. The tournament will continue as planned. The decision comes at a time when relations between the US and Iran remain tense due to the war and security concerns.

Officials believe sports should bring people together. Allowing players to compete while keeping strict security checks is the best way to balance safety, they said.
