A shooting incident was reported at Mexico’s Pyramid of the Moon, a world-renowned tourist place, days ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. As per reports, a Canadian woman was killed in the incident, and 13 others were injured. The site lies in the Teotihuacan archaeological zone of Mexico.
The injured included seven foreign nationals including two Americans, as per reports. In a video that later surfaced online, the gunman was seen running towards the Pyramid of the Moon, where a crowd of tourists lay on the floor next to him
The shooter was reportedly identified as 27-year-old, Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez of Mexico, who acted alone and had no ties to criminal groups or drug cartels, found in the initial investigation.
The Mexican authorities reportedly said that they received first reports of the attack around 11:20 am local time, indicating that an armed man was threatening civilians at the archaeological site. At around 11:30 am, the National Guard arrived at the location and fired a shot at the gunman’s leg, then he shot himself and died.
Officials said the attack appeared to be premeditated, with the gunman visiting the archaeological zone several times, staying in nearby hotels before the deadly incident.
In the belongings of the gunman , authorities reportedly found literature, images and documents allegedly related to the Columbine High School massacre in the United States in April 1999.
The shooting is taking place at the time when Mexico is going to host 13 matches of football world cup from June 11 to July 5 in three cities, including its capital where the opening match will be played.
