Norway’s foreign ministry on Sunday announced that senior diplomat Mona Juul will step down from her post following what it described as a “serious failure of judgement” linked to her ties with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, deepening a growing  scandal in Norway and across parts of Europe.

Juul, who was serving as ambassador to Jordan and Iraq, had been suspended earlier this week pending an internal inquiry after her name appeared in a large cache of files released by the United States government detailing Epstein contact.

Confirming her departure, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said Juul’s contact with the convicted sex offender had undermined confidence in her ability to continue in the role. “The case makes it difficult to rebuild the trust that the role requires,” he said in a statement.

The 66-year-old diplomat is a former junior government minister and has previously served as Norway’s ambassador to Israel and the United Kingdom, as well as a representative to the United Nations.
