An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison, according to reports
Her legal counsel, Mostafa Nili, reportedly said Mohammadi was convicted on charges of “assembly and collusion with the intent to commit crimes.” Along with the prison term, the court also imposed a two-year travel ban.
As per reports, in a separate ruling, Mohammadi received an additional sentence of one year and six months for alleged propaganda activities. She has also been ordered to spend two years in internal exile in Khosf, a city located in South Khorasan province in eastern Iran.
Under Iranian judicial procedures, multiple prison sentences are served simultaneously. Nili noted that the verdict is not final and can be challenged in a higher court. He further expressed hope that, due to her ongoing medical issues, Mohammadi may be granted temporary release on bail to undergo treatment.
Now 53, Mohammadi has faced repeated arrests and trials over the last 25 years for her outspoken opposition to capital punishment and Iran’s compulsory dress laws for women. She has spent much of the last decade in detention and has been separated from her twin children, who reside in Paris, since 2015.
She was briefly freed in December 2024 for three weeks on medical grounds following surgery that involved tumour removal and a bone graft, her lawyer previously said.
Despite her imprisonment, Mohammadi has continued her activism, organizing protests within prison and undertaking hunger strikes. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her sustained campaign against the death penalty in Iran. As she was incarcerated at the time, her children accepted the award on her behalf.
Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, report that Iran executes more people annually than any country except China, where official data is not publicly available.
