In a chilling incident that has shocked residents and raised questions over growing street violence in Uttar Pradesh, a 22-year-old law student from Kanpur University was brutally assaulted after a dispute over the price of a medicine. The attack left him with life-threatening injuries, including a deep abdominal wound and severed fingers.
The victim, identified as Abhijeet Singh Chandel, a first-year law student, had gone to a medical store in the city’s Barra area on Friday evening to purchase a medicine. According to police officials, the argument began when Chandel questioned the price charged by the shopkeeper. What started as a verbal disagreement quickly turned violent, leading to a horrifying physical assault.
The Violent Assault
Police reports and eyewitness accounts suggest that the medical shop owner Amar Singh, along with his brother Vijay Singh and two accomplices, Prince Raj Srivastava and Nikhil, attacked the student with sharp-edged weapons. During the brutal assault, the attackers allegedly slit open the student’s stomach, chopped off two of his fingers, and struck his head repeatedly, causing a severe injury that required 14 stitches.
Local witnesses stated that after sustaining the initial blows, the victim attempted to flee towards his home. However, the attackers chased him and continued the assault until nearby residents intervened. The assailants fled the scene before the police arrived.

Police Action and Investigation
Following the incident, the injured student was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent emergency treatment. Doctors described his condition as “critical but stable.” Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempt to murder and grievous assault.
Senior police officials have confirmed that search operations are underway to apprehend the accused. “The incident is extremely violent and unacceptable. All four suspects will be arrested soon, and strict legal action will be taken,” a senior officer stated.
Public Outrage and Student Reactions
The gruesome nature of the attack has triggered widespread outrage among students and local residents. Several student organisations from Kanpur University have condemned the assault, demanding immediate arrests and stronger safety measures around college areas. Locals have also criticised the growing trend of violent altercations arising from minor disputes, urging police to increase patrolling and surveillance in commercial zones.
Residents of Barra and adjoining localities have expressed concern over the incident, stating that such acts of violence undermine public safety and reveal a lack of deterrence against street crime.
A Grim Reflection of Rising Urban Violence
The assault on the young law student underscores the alarming rise of violent crime in urban Uttar Pradesh, where trivial disagreements often escalate into brutal confrontations. The incident has reignited discussions on the need for better civic policing, quicker emergency response, and stricter enforcement against possession of deadly weapons.
As investigations continue, the victim remains under medical observation, and authorities have assured that the accused will face the harshest legal consequences once apprehended.
