In a move that has stirred political controversy, the official Facebook account of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav—which had over eight million followers—was suspended on Friday evening. The party has cried foul, describing the suspension as a deliberate attempt to silence opposition voices and calling it an attack on democracy.
According to SP sources and multiple media reports, the Facebook page went offline around 6 p.m. without any prior warning or formal notice. Attempts by users to access the page resulted in error messages indicating it was either unavailable or had been removed. The sudden disappearance prompted immediate speculation and criticism from SP leaders and supporters.
In statements to the press, SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chaand asserted that the suspension of Yadav’s Facebook page was an “assault on the voice of millions.” He accused the ruling BJP government of orchestrating the move to suppress dissent and impose an “undeclared emergency” on India’s political discourse. Chaand said that the SP would explore legal recourse and demand accountability from both Facebook and the government for what he characterized as unconstitutional censorship.

Other party leaders joined the chorus, warning that such actions set a dangerous precedent in a democracy where digital platforms play an ever-growing role in political communication. Some raised questions about the safeguards on content moderation and the transparency of decisions made by social media companies.
Observers note that political accounts with large followings are often subject to more scrutiny, but the absence of any explanation or transparency in this case has fueled speculation about partisan interference. The suspension comes at a politically sensitive time, as regional parties like the SP increasingly rely on social media to reach voters across rural and urban constituencies.
At the time of writing, Facebook has not issued a public statement explaining the reason for the suspension or indicating any appeal path. Party sources suggest that the SP leadership has already contacted legal teams to initiate action, and may petition regulatory or judicial bodies to restore the account.
The suspension has sparked sharp debate over the power and accountability of technology platforms in India, especially when political speech is affected. Many analysts are now watching closely to see whether this incident will result in greater regulation of social media or new safeguards for political expression.
