Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly expressed support for recent developments in the Gaza peace process, commending U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in mediating a breakthrough. Modi’s statements come amid renewed momentum in talks and fresh optimism over the release of hostages held by Hamas.
In a message posted on social media, Modi said India “welcomes President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress.” He pointed especially to indications that hostages may be released as “a significant step forward.” He reaffirmed India’s commitment to backing “all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”
This endorsement builds on India’s earlier support for Trump’s 20-point peace framework, which outlines a roadmap to ceasefire, demilitarization, reconstruction, and transition of Gaza’s administration to a neutral body. Modi’s remarks come as Hamas has reportedly accepted parts of the proposal, including returning hostages and engaging in negotiations.
Modi’s timing is notable. India’s foreign policy has consistently espoused balanced diplomacy in West Asia. With growing international attention on the Gaza conflict, India’s support signals alignment with U.S. mediation efforts while seeking to project its image as a stakeholder in global peace. Critics, however, caution that endorsing one particular mediation path might constrain India’s maneuverability in future multilateral negotiations.
As the peace process advances, Modi’s statement may influence diplomatic dynamics, strengthen India–U.S. engagement in the Middle East, and underscore India’s desire to play a constructive international role. Observers will now watch how rival parties, regional states, and the diplomatic corps respond to India’s explicit backing of Trump’s mediation.
