Liverpool: India’s campaign at the 2025 World Boxing Championships received a boost on Wednesday as Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Nupur Sheoran (+80kg) assured the country of two medals by storming into the semifinals.
However, two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen’s quest for a third consecutive medal came to an end after she lost 0-5 to two-time Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Cakiroglu of Turkiye in the 51kg quarterfinals.
Nikhat, returning from injury, faced a tough contest as Cakiroglu dictated the bout with precision punches despite being docked a point. While Nikhat landed a few flurries of hooks and briefly took control in the second round, the Turkish boxer quickly regained momentum, sealing her spot in the semifinals and leaving Nikhat out of medal contention.
Meanwhile, Jaismine dominated Uzbekistan’s Khumorabonu Mamajonovato, using her superior reach and sharp straight jabs to earn a commanding 5-0 win and a berth in the semifinals. Her disciplined approach and strong defense ensured a clean victory and guaranteed her at least a bronze medal.
In the +80kg category, Nupur Sheoran, the granddaughter of boxing legend Hawa Singh, overcame a scrappy contest against Oltinoy Sotimboeva of Uzbekistan to win 4-1. Despite frequent clinching that disrupted the flow of the bout, Nupur’s cleaner punches proved decisive.
Both boxers were penalized for fouls in the final round, but Nupur maintained her composure to secure the win and a guaranteed medal. She will face Turkiye’s Seyma Duztas in the semifinals.
On the men’s side, Jadumani Singh (48kg) and Abhinash Jamwal (65kg) progressed to the quarterfinals with impressive victories, while Jugnoo Ahlawat (85kg) was knocked out in the opening round by Scotland’s Robert McNulty.
