PM Modi Responds to Donald Trump’s ‘Always Be Friends’ Remark, Reaffirms Strong India-US Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shared his first reaction to United States President Donald Trump’s recent statement that the two leaders would “always be friends.” Responding on social media, PM Modi said that India and the US share a “very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership,” adding that he “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates” Trump’s sentiments.

The Prime Minister’s response came after President Trump described India-US ties as a “very special relationship,” while also expressing displeasure over “what PM Modi is doing at this particular moment.” Trump, however, stressed that despite occasional differences, there was “nothing to worry about” in the bilateral relationship.

Speaking to ANI when asked about resetting ties with India, Trump reiterated, “I’ll always be friends with PM Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister. I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a very special relationship.”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also underscored the significance of New Delhi’s partnership with Washington. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that the relationship is rooted in “shared interests, democratic values, and strong people-to-people ties.” He noted that the partnership has “weathered several transitions and challenges” and will continue to move forward on the basis of mutual respect.

Trump’s remarks came just a day after he claimed that the US had “lost” India and Russia to China. His comments followed Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit 2025 in Tianjin, China, where he was seen alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
