BSE received a bomb threat through email, turns out to be a hoax; an FIR has lodged

On Monday, July 13, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) received an email bomb threat, which the Mumbai police later determined to be a hoax. Following the alert, authorities initiated an immediate investigation, but a thorough search revealed no explosives.

The threat was sent to a BSE employee from an email address impersonating ‘Comrade Pinarayi Vijayan,’ the Chief Minister of Kerala.

The email alleged that four RDX-based improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had been placed within the BSE tower and warned of a potential explosion at 3 pm on that day.

St Stephen’s College, a school located in Dwarka, also received a bomb threat, prompting an ongoing search operation.

The police and bomb squad conducted a comprehensive sweep of the area.

The employee promptly notified BSE security, who then reached out to the Mumbai Police. A case was filed against an unidentified individual at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg Police Station under sections 351(1)(b), 353(2), 351(3), and 351(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Mumbai Police, along with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), performed an extensive search of the building and its surroundings.

The threat was ultimately deemed false, and the BSE continued its normal operations.

Authorities found no suspicious items or evidence of explosives. Although the threat was ruled out, security measures have been heightened as a precautionary step.

The exchange confirmed that its operations were not disrupted. A spokesperson for the BSE stated, “The Exchange’s functioning continues as normal. We remain alert and are cooperating with authorities.”

An FIR has been lodged, and an investigation is underway to trace the source of the threatening email and identify those responsible.
